Katie Gardner (Fellow SDTA, SOBHD Judge)

Known throughout North America and Scotland, Katie has had a successful career in dancing.  She began Highland dancing at the age of three.  From this early start, Katie progressed quickly to championship level dancing.  Under the instruction of Bill Troock and Kelly Abrahart, she has won the Alberta Provincial Championships a record 13 times and represented Alberta in the Canadian Championships 15 consecutive times.  Katie has been first runner-up at the Canadian Championships three times and was second runner-up at the World Championships in 1998.  Other highlights of Katie’s dancing career include winning the British Overseas Championships, the North American Championships, the Western Canadian Championships, and the Western North American Championships.

Katie has not limited her dance training to Highland.  She also began ballet at an early age, completing her Advanced Royal Academy Exam at the age of seventeen.  Katie is also trained in jazz, tap, modern/contemporary, Irish and French Canadian Step Dancing.  This multi-disciplined background to dancing has led her to performances in the Nutcracker, the Canadian Festival at Inawashiro, Japan in 1999, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebration with the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2002, as well as demonstrations in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2007.  Katie’s dancing has provided her with the opportunities to travel extensively throughout North America and Scotland.

Katie began teaching in 1995 at the Strathcona School of Dance in Edmonton with the aspiration to become a Scottish Official Board judge.  In August of 2003, she passed her judges exam and now judges whenever she gets the chance.  Katie passed her Fellowship examination in 2004 and moved to Calgary for work. Since relocating to Calgary, she has been actively involved in Highland Dancing by running a dance school and taking on the position of Scotdance Alberta Registrar for the south region of Alberta.

In addition to Katie’s dedication to dancing, she has completed two degrees at the University of Alberta.  Her first degree is a Bachelor of Science with a major in Palaeontology and a minor in Archaeology.  Katie’s second degree is a Bachelor of Science Specialization in Geology.  She resigned from her job at ConocoPhillips Canada to stay home with her two boys, Logan and Grady.
